The oldest part of the house was built in the early 18th century and was probably a shop. It has been added to and altered over the last 250 years and was, in its heyday, part of a silk mill that stood in the garden and provided work for the local girls. Some of the massive stones that made up the mill structure are still visible in the garden, as is the little stream that powered the mill race.
The Far Sitting Room
Light the log burner, put your feet up and watch something entertaining.
The Middle Sitting Room
There are any number of places where you can sit together in the house. The middle sitting room is normally where games are played. Choose from some old favourites housed in the dresser.
The Dining Room
What could be a nicer way to spend an evening that chatting, eating and drinking with friends? The dining room is big enough for the entire household [and a few extras] to sit down and eat together.
Make it a very special occasion by having someone else do the hard work for you. Our chef comes with help to lay up, serve and clear away so all you have to do is to turn up and enjoy.
The kitchen is well equipped with all manner of modern toys to make your holiday more labour saving and a lovely place to cook in. You can try out an induction hob [faster and much cleaner than gas] and Fisher and Paykel dishdrawers while you stay with us. There is plenty of fridge and freezer space in the kitchen and in the nearby pantry plus a back up dishwasher if you have a mountain of plates to deal with. We provide all the utensils, crockery, glasses, and cutlery you could need.
If you don't fancy cooking for large numbers, relax and let our chef do it for you. We can leave tasty food in the fridge for you to heat up or you can have a catered dinner party with staff to lay up, serve and clear away.
The sunny south facing garden surrounds the house on all sides and is enclosed by stone walls. It is on many different levels and is full of interest although not ideal for games such as cricket. If you need flat space for rounders etc, the village recreation ground is just a short walk up the hill. A little waterfall and stream run through the lawn and with a pond at the end.
Please do make sure that you supervise your children at all times - even a teaspoonful of water can be lethal.
Beds and Baths
There are 6 bedrooms in The Old Mill: 3 doubles; 2 triples and on family room that can sleep up to four people. All our beds zip and link so groups of singles do not have to bunk in together.
Four of the bathrooms are ensuite and, as well as the family bathroom, there is also a cloakroom.
We have two sleeping 'areas' with a single and a double sofabed available. They are merely curtained off and are not proper rooms, as such
